The History of Halloween
Halloween’s roots stretch back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, celebrated on October 31st, marking the end of the harvest season. The Celts believed that on this night, the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, allowing spirits to roam the earth. To ward off these spirits, they wore costumes made of animal skins and lit bonfires. When the Roman Empire conquered Celtic lands, they combined Samhain with their own festivals, adding a dash of Roman traditions. By the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1st as All Saints’ Day, turning October 31st into All Hallows’ Eve — later known as Halloween. Immigrants from Ireland and Scotland brought Halloween traditions to America in the 19th century, where it transformed into a community-centered holiday. By the early 20th century, pranks, parties, and costumes were part of Halloween fun, especially for young people. Trick-or-treating, inspired by old practices like “souling” and “guising,” took off in the U.S. in the 1930s. Today, Halloween is celebrated worldwide, where costumes range from the spooky to the silly. The holiday has become a blend of ancient superstitions, religious customs, and modern pop culture.
