I love the project Declan is working on this week. It really encompasses the best in education. Learning, sure – but also, thinking. Growing. Plus, he is challenging himself to be a better person.
Of course, they are learning about the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. – one of my favorite heroes of history. A man who changed the world with his words and kindness.
But in addition, the assignment calls for an essay and art project describing what the STUDENT can do to change THEIR world, using Dr. King as their inspiration.
Dex chose pollution as his problem, and at first he listed things HE could handle, on a small scale. Like, HIM picking up trash. HIM observing red air days. HIM doing things on his own.
After we talked more about Dr. King’s work – how he spoke to so many people about the civil rights movement and how he was a community organizer, Dex’s project changed. He incorporated making signs to tell people about the dangers of pollution. Organizing city-wide clean-up days. Things that would make a bigger impact on the world.
And right now he is making a model of the globe with little sculptures of the good and bad effects of pollution, showing how his efforts can make a difference.
Martin Luther King Jr. did amazing things in his lifetime.
But the really amazing thing is, he continues to inspire us, today, and every day.
