Outside Days 2026 Day 2: Big Music and Off-Road Adventures in Denver

After spending Friday getting acquainted with the new Outside Days location at Auraria Campus, Day Two gave us a chance to dig deeper into everything the festival had to offer.

And there was a lot.

Saturday brought three bands I was especially excited to photograph: Dawes, The Flaming Lips, and My Morning Jacket. That alone would have made for an excellent festival day. But Outside Days continued to prove that the experiences away from the main stage are just as important as the music.

This time, we even went off-roading in the middle of Denver.

Camp Jeep Takes Us Off-Road

One of the biggest installations at Outside Days was impossible to miss.

Camp Jeep built an entire off-road driving course on the festival grounds, complete with steep inclines, sharp drops, uneven terrain, and obstacles designed to demonstrate exactly what the vehicles could handle. Watching the Jeeps climb the massive hill was impressive enough from the ground. Riding inside one was something else entirely.

This was exactly the kind of installation that makes Outside Days different.

Plenty of festivals have branded tents where you can pick up a tote bag or pose for a photo. This was a full experience. Jeep created something adventurous, memorable, and perfectly connected to the outdoor focus of the weekend.

It also drew a crowd all day. Even people who were not riding stopped to watch the vehicles tackle the course.

A Surprise Meeting With José Andrés

Outside Days also brought an impressive group of speakers to Denver, including chef and World Central Kitchen founder José Andrés.

One of the best memories from the day belonged to my friend Pam, who actually got to meet him.

José Andrés has helped redefine what humanitarian food relief can look like, responding quickly when communities are affected by disasters and conflict. Seeing someone with that kind of global impact walking around a Denver festival was another reminder of how broad the vision for Outside Days has become.

The music may bring many people through the gates, but moments like this give the festival another layer entirely.

Dawes Brings Beautiful Songwriting to the Main Stage

I have actually never photographed Dawes before, so it was super fun to catch this longtime fave live. Finally!

Taylor Goldsmith is a thoughtful and expressive performer, and the band’s songs have room to build without ever losing their emotional center. Their set offered a quieter kind of intensity compared with what would come later in the evening.

Dawes has built an incredibly loyal audience over the years, and it was easy to see why. The crowd listened closely, sang along, and gave the band the kind of attention that strong songwriting deserves.

They were an excellent bridge between the afternoon festival atmosphere and the much bigger productions ahead.

The Flaming Lips Turn Outside Days Into a Spectacle

You never simply watch The Flaming Lips.

You enter their world.

Wayne Coyne and the band have spent decades turning live performances into colorful, surreal celebrations. Their Outside Days set brought that wonderfully strange energy to Auraria Campus.

Photographing The Flaming Lips is always an adventure. There is so much happening at once that it can be hard to decide where to point the camera. Coyne remains one of rock’s most imaginative frontmen, and he understands how to create moments that reach all the way to the back of a festival crowd.

Their music can be playful, emotional, weird, and enormous, sometimes all within the same song.

That combination made them one of the most visually memorable acts of the entire weekend.

My Morning Jacket Closes Day Two

My Morning Jacket took over the main stage for an extended two-hour headlining set, giving the band plenty of room to stretch out.

Jim James has one of those voices that seems made for the open air. It can sound intimate one moment and then rise over an entire festival crowd the next.

The band moved through a set filled with long instrumental passages, huge rock moments, and the kind of musical connection that comes from playing together for decades. Nothing felt rushed. My Morning Jacket was given the time to create a complete show rather than squeeze a headlining performance into a standard festival slot.

It was a strong way to close a day that had already covered an incredible amount of ground.

From Dawes’ songwriting to the wonderful chaos of The Flaming Lips and the expansive sound of My Morning Jacket, Saturday showed just how much musical range Outside Days could fit onto one stage.

Outside Days Finds Its Rhythm

By the end of Day Two, Auraria Campus felt like the natural home for this festival. Denver Mayor Mike Johnston even showed up to celebrate Outside Days and promise more fun in coming years (I am going to hold him to that)!

We now knew how to navigate the grounds. We had more time to explore the installations. The music lineup was stacked from afternoon through night, while speakers, films, outdoor activities, and unexpected encounters (the bathhouse! 😉) filled the spaces between sets.

Day Two was bigger, louder, and more adventurous. And we still had one more day to go.
