Rainbow Kitten Surprise concert photos & review - Denver Mission Ballroom

Rainbow Kitten Surprise at Mission Ballroom Denver

Rainbow Kitten Surprise, often abbreviated as RKS, is a band with a name as unique as their sound. Formed in 2013, this indie rock group hails from Boone, North Carolina. The band was born from the musical collaboration of Ela Melo and Darrick “Bozzy” Keller, who started writing and composing songs in their dorm room at Appalachian State University.

Their debut album, Seven + Mary, quickly gained attention for its raw and emotional lyrics. The follow-up album, RKS, dropped in 2015, further solidifying their place in the indie world. However, it was their third album, How to: Friend, Love, Freefall, released in 2018, that truly catapulted them to fame. It was that year I caught them at Velorama, and then again in 2022 at Shaky Knees.

Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s live performances are pretty magical. Fans rave about the band’s energy and Melo’s charismatic stage presence. Whether they’re playing at a small venue or a large festival, the connection they build with their audience is palpable. Concert-goers often speak of the communal experience at RKS shows – you can definitely feel it. The band has a knack for making each performance feel intimate, no matter the size of the crowd. Their ability to switch seamlessly between high-energy anthems and soulful ballads keeps fans on their toes. (Speaking of toes – Melo is a great dancer, which adds to show.)

In addition to their musical prowess, RKS is known for their advocacy on social issues. They have used their platform to support mental health awareness and LGBTQ+ rights, resonating deeply with their diverse fanbase.

With their unique sound, heartfelt lyrics, and unwavering dedication to their fans, Rainbow Kitten Surprise continues to surprise and delight. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer to their music, one thing is certain: RKS is a band that leaves a lasting impression.
