Stray Cats at Mission Denver - Concert Photos & Review

Stray Cats at Mission Denver

The Stray Cats are a band that needs no introduction to fans of rockabilly music. Formed in 1979 in Long Island, New York, by Brian Setzer (vocals/guitar), Lee Rocker (bass), and Slim Jim Phantom (drums), this trio helped bring the vintage rock ‘n’ roll style back into the mainstream during the early 1980s. Inspired by the sounds of Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, and Eddie Cochran, the Stray Cats fused rockabilly with a modern edge, and their unmistakable style—slicked-back hair, stand-up bass, and scorching guitar riffs—became iconic.

Though the band broke up a few times over the years, they’ve always managed to regroup, playing reunion tours that keep fans coming back for more. Their live shows are electric—Brian Setzer’s guitar work is still as sharp as ever, while Lee Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom keep the rhythm locked down with their unique upright bass and drum setup. It’s a performance that combines nostalgia with fresh energy, drawing in fans young and old.

Most recently, the Stray Cats embarked on a 40th-anniversary tour (and released a live album from that), proving that even after four decades, they’ve still got what it takes to rock a crowd. The shows were a mix of old favorites and new material from their 2019 album, 40.

Watching them live is like stepping into a time machine – only with more tattoos, leather jackets, and an even fiercer sound. I joined the crowd at Mission Ballroom dancing after my photography duties were finished – and also marveled at some talented jitterbugs in the back of the room.

If you get the chance to catch them on the road, don’t miss it; these cats still know how to strut!
