The The at Mission Ballroom
If you’re a fan of unconventional, thought-provoking music, then The The might already be a cherished name in your playlist. Emerging in the late 1970s, this band, led by the Matt Johnson, has consistently defied musical norms. Known for blending post-punk, new wave, and experimental elements, The The’s albums, like the iconic Soul Mining and politically charged Infected, have become timeless classics.
Johnson, the sole constant member, infused his work with deep social commentary and raw emotion. The band’s lyrical themes range from love and loss to political disillusionment, striking a chord with listeners like me. Despite a period of hiatus, The The resurfaced in 2024 with their first new album in 25 years, Ensoulment.
Their Denver stop on the tour was a wonderful moment for us fans, bringing the band’s legendary music back to the Mile High. I have been a fan since the 80s at the least, and it was such a thrill to finally see them live. Matt’s deep, rich voice is almost better live than recorded.
It was a interesting show, though, because it was the first time I have ever attended a seated show at Mission – but it suited the way they set up the concert. The first act was the new album in its entirety, and it’s so beautiful, it really was nice to just sit and soak it in. Then, after a short intermission, The The came back and treated us to all the hits we wanted to hear after so long (and we all got up an danced for the rest of the night). It was a masterful blend of nostalgia and modernity.
Whether you’re rediscovering their music or hearing about them for the first time, The The remains a band that dares to push boundaries. They’re not just musicians; they’re storytellers and provocateurs. If you haven’t yet dived into their world, now’s the perfect time to start. Who knows? Maybe they will actively start touring again? The band definitely has some European dates on the books for 2025!
