Underworld at Fillmore Denver

I’ve been a fan of Underworld since way back in the Underneath the Radar days – which, let’s be honest, they’ve long since left behind. What they built after that pivot is what matters, and it’s hard to overstate how influential they’ve been in shaping modern electronic music.

Formed by Karl Hyde and Rick Smith, Underworld evolved from a fairly traditional rock outfit into one of the defining acts of ‘90s electronic music. Their breakthrough with Dubnobasswithmyheadman and later Second Toughest in the Infants helped bring underground rave culture into a wider consciousness without sanding off its edges. And of course, “Born Slippy .NUXX” became a generational anthem, especially after its unforgettable use in Trainspotting.

What’s always set them apart is that balance – hypnotic, repetitive beats paired with Hyde’s half-stream-of-consciousness vocals, all built for both headphones and massive rooms.

At the Fillmore Auditorium here in Denver, that duality was on full display.

What stood out to me was how they handle buildup. They don’t rush anything. Tracks take their time, layer by layer, until the whole room is locked in. Then they let it open up. You could feel the shift when it happened. Older songs didn’t come off as throwbacks. They still feel current, maybe even more now considering how much of today’s electronic music traces back to this kind of structure. Newer material fit right in without breaking that flow.

I’ve seen a lot of shows at the Fillmore, across just about every genre, and this one felt different. Less about spectacle, more about surrendering to the sound and letting it carry you.

Underworld may not play “Underneath the Radar” anymore, but what they’ve become since then is far more interesting – and, live, still completely compelling.
