Crazy 8’s

Sweetisu tagged me for this a while back and I figured right before vacation is a good time for meme-clearing, right?

8 Things I’m Passionate About

1. Declan. Watching him, teaching him, learning from him, experiencing life through his eyes.

2. Bryan. What a nut. Seriously the best thing that has ever happened to me. My soul mate.

3. Photography. Something I just lose myself in. You can’t say that too often.

4. My job. We do health education web sites and we rock.

5. Politics. I don’t understand our government. I recognize the beauty in there, but I think it’s been buried under a whole lot of crap in the last century.

6. This Blog. I honestly started it on a whim one night two years ago, but it now is a truly integral part of my life.

7. Punctuation. Seriously folks. The commas and periods go INSIDE the quotes. As in: “punctuation,” – NOT: “punctuation”.

8. Life. I asked Bryan what I am passionate about and he said, “everything.” (Notice where the period is?)

God, I hate that punctuation thing too.

  2. Sizzle

what did you think of love is a mixed tape?

and i am with you on the punctuation! INSIDE the quotation marks, people. inside!

  3. Aimee Greeblemonkey

Amy, I am not sure when you mean! ‘Splain, please!

  4. Mayberry

“I knew there was a reason I liked you.”

  5. Aimee Greeblemonkey

And Sizzle, I *loved* Love Is A Mix Tape. Some of the music was hard to follow, even for me (coughs and rubs knuckles on shirt) but seeing as we have similar depth musically, I think you would dig it. Either way, it’s really well written poignant and very funny.

Also, it was a gift from a friend who really gets me, so it also meant a lot to me. 🙂

    Fun post!

  7. Amy

Sometimes the punctuation goes outside the quotation marks…I hate to say it because I hate how it looks, but there you go.

  8. Candy

I work for a lawyer. Sometime I have to put the period outside the quotation marks, depending on the situation. Mostly, it’s when you are speaking about something, let’s say an “exhibit” and that word happens to come at the end of the sentence. For example:

    Please refer to “Exhibit B”.

    not:

    Please refer to “Exhibit B.”

It takes a lot of getting used to, because I would have agreed with you up to about three months ago, but I have been informed otherwise. Here’s a website – http://grammartips.homestead.com/inside.html

I also think it is an American vs. British thing, and maybe because it’s legal stuff they just revert to British. Truly, I don’t know, I’m not a paralegal. I just know my very smart lawyer boss pushes that period outside the quotes every time.

  9. Aimee Greeblemonkey

Interesting. But according that that, even “Exhibit B.” would go inside the quotes, because it says only if it’s a lone letter or number it should go outside – like Exhibit “B”. Or am I reading that wrong?

I never knew all these things about you…

  11. Aimee Greeblemonkey

And either way, bloggers around the universe should be putting it inside the quotes 9 times out of 10 and STOP DRIVING ME CRAZY! ;)))

  12. Sarah

Ha ha, funny about the bus. And good luck getting to the moon!

  13. Amy Barry

Ok, I am a puncutation freak too. But why is it that you can put a question mark or exclamation mark at the end outside the quote, but not a period? See rule below…

“Put a dash, question mark, or exclamation point within closing quotation marks when the punctuation applies to the quotation itself and outside when it applies to the whole sentence.”

I think my biggest problem is wanting to put the name of a song or book in quotes when I should just underline or italicize it which solves this little puncutation anomaly.

  14. Amy Barry

“Now, keep in mind that this comma and period inside the quotation marks business is strictly American usage. The British don’t do it that way. They are inclined to place commas and periods logically rather than conventionally, depending on whether the punctuation belongs to the quotation or to the sentence that contains the quotation, just as we do with question marks and exclamation points.”

So that is my problem. I want to punctuate LOGICALLY!

  15. MB

I love this one. I think I might do it myself. And I just plain stopped at the “celebrate 50 on the moon.” I love that one.

  16. painted maypole

rescue a bus of children? love it!

and love your new blog design. clean and fresh

  17. crabapple

Yes ” It’s my life” is one of my favorites too, I also like “Renee.” Did you see where I put the period?

  18. villanovababy

Hey, I meme’d this on my blog. 🙂

  19. Flower Child

Rock on! Are you up for a Scrabble game?

  20. soccer mom in denial

I really love your “new look.” It is very becoming.

It’s My Life by Talk Talk? Lovely Day by Bill Withers?! You and I Both by Jason Mraz?!? (Falls down and cluthes heart)

Will you stop torturing me? Where have you placed the small little microphone in my brain?

But you need a few more books darling. Perhaps something for, say, January 10th?

  21. Candy

Yeah I have no explanation on the “Exhibit B”. vs. Exhibit “B”. I just know if I don’t do it the way the boss says he looks at me funny, and I’ll do most anything to avoid that.

  22. sweetisu

    Better late than never 😉

    The moon sounds fabulous.

I came up pretty empty on the book list as well, so I put all the kids’ book titles. Hee.
